Last month I had the opportunity to work out on the Alter-G Treadmill at Fusion Physical Therapy thanks to the invitation of our friend Jason D'Amelio. On the Alter-G you step into a plastic apron and are sealed into the machine from the waist down, allowing it to support up to 80% of your bodyweight while you run.
For injured runners this is a great way to maintain (or improve) your fitness with minimal impact and orthopedic stress. While most of the clinical data and case studies on the Alter-G has examined its use for injury rehab, I also see promise for healthy runners who want to avoid overuse injuries but don't want to cut back on their training volume. For runners who tend to break down with high mileage, using the Alter-G at 70-80% of their actual body weight for some of their weekly miles might be an effective strategy to stay healthy while increasing their training.
You can contact Jason for a free test drive of the Alter-G as well as for discounted packages. Or if you have $70,000 laying around you can buy your own.
